week 6

This week is very special for me because I have tried/intend to try as many new teaching techniques as possible and get feedback from my students. The articles I have read so far have been extremely helpful in helping me build up my theoretical knowledge as well as practical one. I couldn`t help but participate in both discussions this week, although only one is obligatory, but I find the topics so interesting and if I didn`t do it I would feel bad and left out.
Power Point has always been my weak point, no matter how much I learned I always encounter a problem I need help with. Sometimes I ask myself if I am ever going to master it.
Engaging students is another difficulty we all have as teachers. Students seem to be less and less interested in what we have to offer or just too tired and busy with other things. That is why we, as teachers always have to look for new ways to motivate them. Sometimes I ask myself, who will work on my motivation?.Where do I find it? I remember as a student I had it and if the teacher was motivating, fine, if not, I found motivation within myself. But today`s students seem to blame it  all on us and make us do their job too!

  1. Hello Dragana,
I have just looked at your powerpoint presentation and I think you are underestimaitng your expertise, dear.Have you seen mine? which is in quite a primitive form. It is a real challange for me because this is the first time I have ever created one and I really couldn't benefit from the guidance in the articles.their powerpoint and mine seem to be speaking different languages.:)
you are very right in all you have said about today's students. They do not have any ideals to live for. But I don't blame them either because almost everything ,unfortunately, has lost its meaning in this century.they can attain things easily without striving.Think about the flow of info through the internet, fast transportation, shopping and entertainment opportunities, etc. Values are bought and sold. They don't know anything about the real meaning of working, learning, earning or making effort. They were born to shallow morality. I may sound too pessimistic but this is the disease of the modern world. Who is the culprit then ? Not us not them. The system as a whole. Then we need to collaborate. that's why I believe our job is more difficult now and goes beyond teaching the grammar and four skills.
    My best

  2. Hi Sebnem,
I wanted to look at your presentation, but I couldn`t find it. Did you put it where PowerPoint Files are?
You might think my presentation is good , but Power Point is something I keep coming across every time I do an online course or any kind of methodology course. It doesn`t matter how many presentations I make it always gets on my nerves and there is always something that goes wrong!

  3. Hi Dragana,
You can see my presentation on wiki powerpoint pages.
    Waiting for your comments
Technology makes us crazy sometimes, maybe it is because we aren't experts...I still think yours look very professional.. Did you add all these pictures yourself and make them background. ?
and can you tell me how did you give the true false option a "button look" my options are just mere scripts .
    Thanks

  4. Dear Sebnem,
Unfortunately I cannot see it. I looked again and I can see ‚five or six presentations, but none of them is yours.
Yes, I added all the pictures and backgrounds. You have to tell me which version of Power Point you have . I have 2007 and there you go to Insert- Shapes and at the very bottom you have Action buttons and the very last one which says Action Button : Custom you click on it and get a plus and then put the box wherever you want. You can also make hyperlinks and add sound.
    I hope this helped,
    Dragana

  5. Hi Dragana,

Good to read your post. Even I'm with Sebnem regarding your knowledge on PowerPoint. I saw your slide show before I designed mine. You are competent in this tool but always there are more things to learn. That's the nature of most of the computer packages I suppose. It was a big challenge for me but I did well as a starter.

When comes to students' motivation, its a different topic to discuss. My students love to learn English through their mother tonuge. Everywhere, they go the easy way. I think what Sebnem said about them is correct. User friendly, easy ways make the younger generations lazy and they love easy and quick ways in learning languages too!!

If we stick together and share our ideas, problem together (even after this course), we will tackle them well.

    All the Best!

  6. Dear Chandy,
Thank you, but as you said there are always new things to be learned not only about technology , but also about our students

  7. Hi Dragana,

Yes, I'm with you. Students are the number one customers of us. We have to study and understand their behaviour in learning the language and select the best suited technology to go with. Then only there will be a compatibility.
